Robert H. Smith International Center for Jefferson Studies at Montalto
The restoration of Montalto was a unique opportunity to partner with the Thomas Jefferson Memorial Foundation in creating a facility that could be utilized as a conference and events center. The building is perched atop Montalto, overlooking Monticello, in one of the most breathtaking settings in Central Virginia. Construction of the house and barns began in 1905 under owner James Addison Patterson, and the house was named, “Repose.” Martin Horn has restored many of the original elements of the house while creating new elements that have made this a first-class facility for hosting events. The project scope also included stone walls, terraces, and landscaping on the exterior, as well as a total utility upgrade to accommodate a substantial number of guests and their needs. This restoration is projected to achieve LEED Silver, and includes many impressive features: a fully-operational geothermal HVAC system; a rain harvesting system; and its own industrial water treatment plant
