This complex project demanded exceptional teamwork and planning. The plant provides chilled water to cool the University’s medical and research facilities. The schedule was aggressive and phasing had to be executed precisely: even a day without air conditioning would have jeopardized hospital care and multi-million dollar research experiments.
The plant’s location—adjacent to the University of Virginia Medical Center—posed additional challenges. While installing caissons for the building’s foundation, we had to prevent vibrations and keep metal out of the magnetic field of a nearby MRI facility. We also took special precautions to prevent fumes and chemicals from polluting the medical buildings’ air intakes.
In the end, we met all the University’s needs for conditioned air without disruption to the medical center. |
